The Great Orion Nebula
M42 (NGC 1976) is the famous Orion Nebula, a huge cloud of gas and dust 15 Lj in diameter at a distance of 1,300 Lj, where a star cluster is currently being born. Most of the light we receive from the nebula is fluorescent light. This is caused by the intense UV radiation emitted by the young, freshly born, hot stars.
